Danville Native Helps Transform Cancer Care

Julius Hegeler was a passionate man who loved his Danville community deeply. In 1956, Julius married the love of his life, Bobette Steely. They raised three children in the Danville community before she passed in 1976. Those close to Julius say he always strived to make the community a better place for all who lived there. After Bobette’s passing, Julius remained strong and faithful to his community, encouraging those he encountered to give back to local charities. Because of Julius’ philanthropic heart and support of OSF HealthCare Sacred Heart Medical Center, the cancer center was renamed to the Bobette Steely Hegeler Cancer Center in honor of his late wife who died of ovarian cancer.

Sadly, Julius passed away in 2019, but his philanthropic legacy remains. OSF HealthCare Foundation is honored to receive a generous gift from the estate of Julius W. Hegeler II benefiting the Bobette Steely Hegeler Cancer Center at OSF HealthCare Sacred Heart Medical Center in Danville, IL. The $3 million gift from the Julius W. Hegeler II estate is intended to support, enhance and expand the oncology programs and services in Danville and surrounding communities.

“This very generous gift from the Julius W. Hegeler II Foundation exemplifies what Julius lived for,” said Dr. Jared Rogers, President, OSF HealthCare Sacred Heart Medical Center. “He lived to give back to others in the community he called his home. Danville and Vermilion County are much better for the life that Julius led, but he has shown us all that it doesn’t stop with his death or ‘folding his wings,’ as he commonly referred to it. His legacy will live on for many decades to come in the cutting-edge care for those afflicted with cancer for whom he had such great compassion.”

Local and Compassionate Cancer Care

A cancer diagnosis can be heart-wrenching and bring a whirl-wind of emotions for patients and their families. Julius saw this and had compassion for these patients on a personal level, after all, he knew first-hand how they felt. At the Bobette Steely Hegeler Cancer Center, each patient receives personalized care as their care teams build relationships that last a lifetime. The doctors and health care specialists are dedicated to helping each patient battle their diagnosis and help them return to a life filled with joy, laughter and hope.

With Julius’ estate gift, the Bobette Steely Hegeler Cancer Center can continue to advance the way our community receives cancer care. Patients and their families can feel at ease knowing they have immediate access to cancer care, right here in the Danville community. In fact, the OSF Bobette Steely Hegeler Cancer Care Center is the only full-service cancer center in Vermilion County offering cancer treatment with medical oncology and radiation oncology in one location.

OSF HealthCare remains grateful for Julius Hegeler and his extraordinary generosity. Julius was a true example of how a philanthropic spirit and compassionate heart can support an entire community.
